MECX Group has recently made a large investment into the purchase of Road/Rail Plant and Equipment. The plant we have purchased is best in its class and has the latest safety and environmental features. The investment we have made will be one of many and demonstrates our long term commitment to the growth and development of our rail services and over-arching business capabilities.  With thousands of people involved in our business we are now able to deliver RRV Hire, POS Services and Principal Contracting services across the UK.

As a result of this purchase MECX’s road/rail fleet now counts more than 10 Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs), including the latest fleet of rail electrification Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs), as well as attachments for rail piling, drainage, vegetation clearance, bridge works and crossings. We also have a dedicated maintenance team who vigorously ensure that all our equipment is maintained to the highest standards so that any projects undertaken are delivered safely, on time and to budget.

RAILWAY TRAINING COURSES

In 2018 we acquired a 50% stake into PPS Rail.  This investment allowed us to capitalise and expand upon MECX’s current service offering to include Rail Training & Possession Planning Services.  MECX now offer an extensive range of Railway Courses and Assessments which include IOSH Working Safely and Managing Safely at our state of the art centre in Warrington, Cheshire.

These courses are run by our sister company PPS Rail who are accredited by the National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR) and members of the Association of Rail Training Providers.

Courses are delivered in our purpose-built training centre in Warrington. This includes an indoor track induction area, three dedicated training rooms, IT equipment and catering facilities. The track area enables role play simulation in dealing with signals, cross-overs, overhead lines and personal track safety.

The Training Centre is just 2 miles from Junction 21 on the M6 motorway with plenty of free parking close to the venue. The Centre features fully fitted training rooms, twin track indoor practical area and a large kitchen/break area with free wifi.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME

We believe that skilled employees are paramount to our operational success and that a business is only as good as the people it employs.  That’s why at MECX we invest heavily in the training and development of our workforce in order to ensure that our business maintains a competitive advantage whilst remaining the preferred supplier to our clients.

The Apprenticeship programmes that we run are equally as important as our training, and more especially because of the current skills shortages facing the rail industry.  At MECX we are committed to fully utilising our Apprenticeships & Training Programmes in order to provide our workforce with lots of personal growth and development opportunities.

Lots of exciting opportunities lie ahead for those wishing to embark on a career in the rail industry and over the next 5 years a £37bn spend by Network Rail updating its current railway infrastructure.  Not to mention High Speed 2 being built.  We run numerous Apprenticeship Schemes such as:-

Over a 3 year period you’ll have lots of responsibility together with a varied workload.  As an Apprentice you might find yourself managing the tracks, inspecting projects or even working on the electrification system.

We pay you £9,479 during your first year, plus £1,265 for successful completion.

In the second year, this rises to:

  • Age 18 – 20: £12,525.00
  • Age 21-24: £13,331.40 (£13,431.60 from 1 April 2018)
  • Age 25+:   £14,182.35 (£14,250.60 from 1 April 2018)
  • £14,924.20 in the third year.

POSSESSION & ISOLATION PLANNING

As well as providing training courses our sister company PPS Rail has an expert team on hand to provide professional possession & isolation planning services.  Our expert access team use a collaborative partnership approach with all our clients in order to ensure maximum productivity and that the job gets done with minimal disruption.

Providing a dedicated and highly experienced workforce to clients ensures maximum possession utilisation and delivery of any project on time and to budget. The staff we employ have extensive route knowledge of the rail networks which dramatically reduces any risks or works being cancelled.

Our planning team have the required knowledge and expertise to:

  • Input Engineering Possessions applications into Network Rail’s Possession Planning System (PPS)
  • Complete Railway Business Case and Access & Resource Planning Change Request Forms (ARPCR) for late requests.
  • Attend all Pre-Possession Planning Meetings up to and including the PICOP Briefing.
  • Plan Isolation’s and book Engineering Trains.
  • Input Line Blockages to be published in the Weekly Operating Notice (WON) that require the stoppage of all trains onto the PPS.
  • Complete all necessary possession documentation
  • Produce a Possession Plan and update clients weekly on the status of their work sites.

Vegetation Management Services

We provide our clients with a turnkey solution for safe, secure and cost-effective Vegetation Management Services to in respect of vegetation control and its removal.

We have highly qualified teams of skilled and trained personnel and are able to undertake de-veg works on behalf of clients operating throughout the UK infrastructure industry, including rail, power lines, highways and waterways.

Staff are qualified to NPTC City & Guilds or LANTRA, with all relevant competences refreshed as per client or industry guidelines.

Our team are at the forefront of UK safety standards in the UK arboriculture, forestry and infrastructure sectors.  The team has reviewed and commented on a number of Industry Codes of Practice for specific utility arboriculture operations.

The team is able plan and deliver isolation to undertake rail works that require Ac/Dc lines to be isolated.

We manage and maintain our own plant which is specifically designed for high output in safety critical environments. Our “in House” staff are LOLER certified inspectors and ensure all climbing equipment meets or exceeds industry standards.

Our de-veg teams are available 24/7, for both planned works and emergency works.

MECX has an extensive background of work in the rail engineering sector; we have the specialism in a range of technical activities which complement our general civil engineering offering. We work on various asset types undertaking maintenance, renewals and enhancement of the mainline network, as well as working on underground railways, light rail and tramways.

In line with our core offering, three core activities the combine to make up our rail engineering service:

  • Infrastructure projects – enhancing the rail infrastructure through the construction of new assets.
  • Asset management – maintenance and renewal of existing rail infrastructure assets, as well as facilities management of buildings in lineside and high street environments.
  • Support Services – the provision of temporary labour and contract staff to support the clients and works that we undertake delivering projects and maintaining assets, plus additional specific services such as the provision of OHLE and DC 3rd rail isolations and training.

To provide a relevant framework to govern our works delivery, MECX holds a Network Rail Principal Contractor’s Licence and all applicable RISQS codes to cover our activities.

Regarding the types of asset portfolios on which we work, they are electrification, signalling and track.

ELECTRIFICATION

MECX has considerable delivery experience in railway electrification on both mainline and light rail infrastructure, covering both OHLE and DC conductor rail systems. Additionally, we have expertise in traction, both HV-AC and DC distribution systems.

MECX can manage all phases and aspects of railway electrification projects from development, design and implementation through to testing, commissioning and final hand back into service. Services offered by our electrification division include:

We have experience of working on mechanical and multiple aspects signalling systems, as well as in-cab systems, such as ETCS. Our works focus on the mechanical and electrical systems which control the movement of trains on and around the rail infrastructure and at intersections with the rail infrastructure.

TRACK
We are a multi-disciplinary track renewal and maintenance service provider that delivers major permanent way projects.

At MECX we carry out plain line track, switches and crossings, track drainage and level crossing works, from design through to delivery. We also offer re-sleepering/re-timbering, re-railing, component overhaul, tolerance and adjustment/correction, ballasting and management of operating mechanisms and switches.

Our specialist teams have successfully delivered projects for a vast range of clients, each with different site-specific requirements, complexities, timescales and standards.

The efficient transmission and distribution of gas and electricity, plus the supply of water and sewerage services to businesses and homes is another essential aspect of a productive infrastructure sector.

MECX prides itself on delivering works and providing services to the asset owners, operators and their contracted supply chain to help maintain the effectiveness of existing assets while helping to improve the capacity of those networks by enhancing the electricity, gas and water assets.
