MECX has an extensive background of work in the rail engineering sector; we have the specialism in a range of technical activities which complement our general civil engineering offering. We work on various asset types undertaking maintenance, renewals and enhancement of the mainline network, as well as working on underground railways, light rail and tramways.
In line with our core offering, three core activities the combine to make up our rail engineering service:
- Infrastructure projects – enhancing the rail infrastructure through the construction of new assets.
- Asset management – maintenance and renewal of existing rail infrastructure assets, as well as facilities management of buildings in lineside and high street environments.
- Support Services – the provision of temporary labour and contract staff to support the clients and works that we undertake delivering projects and maintaining assets, plus additional specific services such as the provision of OHLE and DC 3rd rail isolations and training.
To provide a relevant framework to govern our works delivery, MECX holds a Network Rail Principal Contractor’s Licence and all applicable RISQS codes to cover our activities.
Regarding the types of asset portfolios on which we work, they are electrification, signalling and track.
MECX has considerable delivery experience in railway electrification on both mainline and light rail infrastructure, covering both OHLE and DC conductor rail systems. Additionally, we have expertise in traction, both HV-AC and DC distribution systems.
MECX can manage all phases and aspects of railway electrification projects from development, design and implementation through to testing, commissioning and final hand back into service. Services offered by our electrification division include:
- Earthing & Bonding

- Main and Small Part Steelwork
We offer a full design and build services, including independent design checks, and bonding design and installation, plus heights and stagger survey analysis and adjustments, and installation, testing and commissioning.
We are a niche provider of signal construction, installation, testing and maintenance works and services to the mainline rail network. We have experience of working on mechanical and multiple aspects signalling systems, as well as in-cab systems, such as ETCS. Our works focus on the mechanical and electrical systems which control the movement of trains on and around the rail infrastructure and at intersections with the rail infrastructure.
MECX offers a full range of services to asset owner and operators, examples of which are:
