It has been revealed that the Southern Western Railway Franchise has agreed a deal to offer passengers the first 5G connectivity, giving passengers and railway infrastructure providers super-fast speeds.
Working with Blu Wireless, Network Rail and the DfT, FirstGroup’s rail division has created a solution that ensures that its trains will benefit from 5G connectivity, making it an industry first. The super-fast WiFi connectivity will enable passengers and providers to connect, offering the chance to work at speeds of up to 100 times faster than the current 4G network. This technology will be rolled out across the South Western Railway Franchise to begin with. This will make FirstGroup the first, exclusive supplier of Blu Wireless’s new 5G rail system that can be used by customers and infrastructure providers. It will also work closely with Network Rail to ensure that the railway infrastructure is improved through the use of 5G connectivity.
The head of digital communication at FirstGroup, Simon Holmes has stated that they have worked tirelessly during the past few years in order to get to where they are right now. This means that they are not at the point where they can implement this new technology ensuring that all can benefit from it. This partnership with Blu Wireless is a move in the right direction and shows that connectivity for customers as they use the service is going to change for the better. The whole success of the project hinges on this relationship working towards the same common goal.
The commercial director at First Rail, Hugh Clancy has expresses his thanks to the suppliers and partners involved in making this project a success and he celebrated it with the ongoing support of Dft and Network Rail, all of which will mean that South Western Railway will become the first railway in the UK to have 5G connectivity.
